Foot and Ankle Problems During Pregnancy

    Published on February 4th, 2019

For many women, being pregnant is one of the most exciting and magical parts of life, but there’s no denying that there are many changes that accompany this process. Having a baby can cause both weight gain and hormonal changes that impact your feet and ankles.

Here are some changes that you might experience while you are pregnant, and ways that you can find relief.

    Swelling & Cramping

Because of the increased size of the uterus and fetus, there may be a buildup of fluid in the legs. Blood flow is also reduced during pregnancy, meaning that swelling will go down slower than usual. To help to reduce any swelling or cramping that you feel, make sure that you are participating in regular exercise and wearing compression socks when necessary. Massage therapy is a great way to alleviate soreness as well.

    Heel or Foot Pain

One common foot-related ailment during pregnancy is flat feet. This is due to an excess amount of weight that you are carrying, causing the arch of your feet to flatten. You may also notice that your feet roll inward when you are walking, causing pain. Make sure to wear supportive shoes or custom orthotics to find relief.

    Joint Instability

Pregnant women may experience joint instability due to foot and ankle joints becoming more lax. This may also change the way in which you walk, ultimately resulting in a broader gait.

If you or someone you know is pregnant and suffering from foot or ankle pain, encourage them to seek professional assistance to relieve pain and stay healthy throughout pregnancy.
