    Healthy Summer Tips

    Published on June 23rd, 2016

Your feet take a beating in the summer, from walking around on the beach, wearing sandals, and more. Fortunately, there are a couple different tips you can follow to ensure that your feet stay happy throughout these summer months!

Blister Prevention: Painful blisters can easily crop up, especially when you wear new sandals! When you are shopping for new summer shoes, only buy them if they are comfortable when you are walking around the store. Do not have the mentality that you will be able to “break them in”. In addition, go sandal shopping in the afternoon, as this is when your feet will be at their largest. Go for leather sandals, or at least ones made of soft fabric.

Say No To Flip-Flops: While supportive sandals do exist, flip-flops are not one of them! Unless they have arch support, a thicker sole, multiple straps to place pressure off of your toes, avoid these summer shoes. You can get away with wearing a pair to the pool, but overuse can lead to stress fractures, heel pain, and more. In addition, be careful when you are walking barefoot-usually flip-flops are still a better option than bare feet.

Avoid Germs: The temperatures in the summer may be preferred over the bitter cold of winter, but it also leads to an increase in germs, particularly those lurking in sweat. Open shoes can invite a host of germs, so it is important to wash off your shoes if possible, and wash your hands often! Also, if you enjoy indulging in summer pedicures, understand that there are many germs at salons. Try to bring your own tool set, or at least schedule one of the first appointments of the day. It is also a good idea to avoid shaving your legs for at least 24 hours before the appointment.

Summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors, let your feet breathe, and take in the sand and the beach! However, to keep your feet healthy, it is important to follow the previous steps in your quest for sun. Feel free to contact our office to schedule an appointment so you are ready for the summer!
